Winter Lip Care for Cold-Water Surfers: A Cornish Guide

There's nothing quite like a winter session in Cornwall: empty line-ups, clean groundswell and that first duck dive that wakes up every nerve in your body. But if you've ever paddled in with lips that feel tight, chapped and wind-burnt, you'll know the cold water takes its toll. This is our guide to winter lip care for cold-water surfers – simple habits that keep your lips comfortable from October right through to spring.

Why winter is so tough on surfers' lips

Your lips don't have the same protective layer as the rest of your skin, so they're usually the first thing to feel it when the weather turns. In winter you get a triple hit: cold, biting offshore winds, salt water drying on your skin, and then the dry heat of the car blowers and the radiator once you're home.

Add in a long session where you're squinting into a low sun and licking salt off your lips without thinking, and it's no wonder they end up feeling rough by Sunday evening.

Winter lip care for cold-water surfers: our five-step routine

1. Balm up before you suit up

Put a good layer of balm on before you pull your wetsuit on, not after. A wax-based balm sits on the surface of your lips and gives a bit of a barrier against wind and water. Reapply on the beach if you have time – it's easier with dry hands, so we keep a tin in the car door rather than in the wetsuit bag.

2. Don't forget the sun in winter

It's easy to think sun protection is a summer job, but on a bright winter day the sun can still catch you, especially with light bouncing off the water. For long sessions on clear days, a zinc-based block on your nose, cheeks and lip line is worth considering. Our Cornish Zinc Sun Block SPF50 comes in the same plastic-free tin, so it lives happily alongside your balm.

3. Rinse the salt off

After a surf, give your face a quick rinse with fresh water if you can – a bottle of warm water in the van is a winter luxury that's well worth it. Pat dry, then reapply your balm once your lips are clean.

4. Stop licking!

We all do it. Licking your lips feels like it helps, but as the moisture evaporates it tends to leave them drier than before. If you catch yourself doing it, reach for your balm instead.

5. Look after yourself off the water

Drink plenty of water, warm up properly after a session and take your balm with you – a dry, heated office or a long drive home can undo all your good work. A balm by the bed is a nice habit too.

What to look for in a winter lip balm

When you're choosing a balm for cold-water surfing, a few things make a real difference:

  • A solid, waxy texture that stays put in wind and spray rather than melting straight off.
  • Simple ingredients you recognise.
  • A tough, pocket-sized container that won't crack in the cold or leak in your bag.
  • Plastic-free packaging, because the last thing our beaches need is another plastic tube.

That's exactly why we make Cornish Surf Balm by hand in small batches and pour it into aluminium tins. They're tough enough to be rattling around a car door all winter, and they can go in the recycling when you're done.

Pick your flavour

Our balms come in four flavours, each £4.99:

  • Peppermint – a fresh, tingly favourite for frosty dawn patrols.
  • Coconut – a little taste of summer in the middle of January.
  • Sweet Orange – bright and zesty, very Christmassy.
  • Lemongrass – clean and fresh for after a long session.

Can't decide? The Christmas Gift Box has all four flavours for £19.99 – one for the car, one for the wetsuit bag, one for your coat and one by the bed. It also makes a cracking present for the cold-water surfer in your life, and there's free UK delivery on orders over £15.

Keep surfing all winter

Winter is some of the best surfing Cornwall has to offer, and a bit of lip care means you can enjoy every session without paying for it afterwards. Balm before, rinse after, and keep a tin within reach.
